The Audi 100 is a legendary model today, just like the Audi 200. Especially collectors and Audi enthusiasts can't get enough of it. If you need to replace the windscreen of an Audi 100 or Audi 200 that you have in mind (or that is already in possession), it's good to know that the after market offers more than enough opportunities. These windscreens are attractively priced and of exactly the same quality as the Audi brand glass itself. Before we go into this in more detail, we should first take a look at this special model.
The first generation of the Audi 100 rolled out of the factory in 1968. The gearbox and front-wheel drive came from the Audi Super 90 and that was all that was borrowed from existing versions. The other parts are all specially made for this new Audi. The Audi 100 is built on the Volkswagen C1 platform and is designed by Ludwig Kraus. The brakes of the front wheels were mounted in the gearbox itself. The typical looks of this generation make this a special appearance.
Audi did, however, make a mistake with the first versions. The drive shafts of the first types slit very fast and oil leaked from the engine onto the brake discs. In 1970 Audi had solved this problem and offered repair kits for the already sold models.
The second generation of the Audi 100 was launched in 1976. It was offered as a 5-cylinder. This model was sold in America under the name Audi 5000. The second generation Audi 100 and Audi 200 were produced as a sedan and avant-garde.
In 1988 the model got a facelift (88B) where the door handles were incorporated in the body. The dashboard was also considerably larger. The following year Audi set another world record with this type. With the new 5-cylinder TDi engine, the third generation Audi 100 could cover a distance of 1250 kilometres on one tank of diesel.
According to many, the third generation also had the best Audi 200 version, a more luxurious version of the Audi 100. The 200 version had a 2.2 litre turbo engine with 220 hp and was also released with quattro drive. This model was made from 1982 to 1992, one year longer than the third generation of the Audi 100 itself.
The Audi V8 is built from the same body as this third generation.
Several 6-cylinders were offered, with twelve valves and good torque for optimal power. Only the 2.4D went completely wrong. The 82 hp and 164 Nm were a very moderate combination: 16.4 seconds over 0 to 100 kilometres per hour...
The fourth generation of the Audi 100 and 200 seems to have been the switch to the Audi A6 and Audi S6. In 1994 Audi took over the Audi 100, changed the engine range and made some minor adjustments. It wasn't called a facelift, it wasn't a new generation: it was a completely different car and the Audi A6 was born out of the Audi 100 C4, which has only been in production for four years.
This can be seen in the many parts that have been copied on a 1:1 basis. For example, the windscreen of the Audi 100 C4 is interchangeable with an Audi A6 windscreen (1994-1997).
The windscreen of an Audi 100 or 200 has to be replaced in case of window damage in the driver's field of vision, or a branched crack in the windscreen. Car window replacement is therefore not always necessary in the event of window damage, as in some cases it can also be repaired. If the car window is cracked, repair is no longer possible.
If a second hand Audi 100 or 200 needs a windscreen replacement, this is no reason to leave the car in the hands of the seller. Do you find a well-maintained Audi 100 or 200 and is the car window broken? Take a look at the prices of after market glass before you let the deal go. It can be considerably cheaper than at the dealer, so this pearl is within your budget.
The prices of Audi 100 and 200 windscreens are quite high when you look at the dealer, especially because these types (for a long time) are no longer made. However, if you choose after market car windows, the prices are much lower. This after market automotive glass is often made in the same factory as the brand glass. The requirements are exactly the same, but the after market glass does not have a brand logo - and that makes the cost of a windscreen replacement lower.
