Windscreen replacement costs for your Audi A3

Nearly 100,000 copies were sold in the Netherlands, and new Audi A3 models are still leaving the factory. This popular car is a successful model from the German manufacturer. Do you have an Audi A3 and do you need to replace the windscreen? Then you can visit the after market, where the prices for automotive glass are a lot lower than at the Audi dealer. Before we look further at the new Audi A3 windscreens, we will first look at the model itself. How can the success be explained, and how did the A3 perform compared to competitors such as the BMW 1-series and the Peugeot 307?

The Audi A3: in production since 1996

The first Audi A3 came out of the factory in 1996. The relationship with the Volkswagen Golf was immediately clear. Not only was the same platform used, also many parts were taken over unchanged to the new A3. This model can be called remarkable in many ways. For example, it is a lower middle class (the first since the Audi 50)
and the engines are not in the length, but in the width. Of course this has everything to do with the PQ34 platform on which this model is built.

The first generation got the code 8L and was produced until 2003. This type was released as a 3-door and 5-door and is related to the Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Golf and the Audi TT, which are built on the same platform. In 2000 the Audi A3 8L was given a facelift, which mainly involved changing its appearance. From the facelift there has been a big change in the diesel versions: Audi got off the distributor pump and opted for a pump nozzle.

The sporty version of the A3 came on the market in 1999. The Audi S3 is equipped with four-wheel drive and was delivered with 210 or 225 hp. This type also has the 8L indication and uses exactly the same Audi A3 windscreens as the first generation of the A3.

The second generation (8P): Walter de'Silva and a new platform

The second generation of the A3 was built on the PQ35 platform and was designed by Walter de'Silva,
who also took care of the Audi Q7, Audi A6 and Volkswagen Up! The second generation (8P) was delivered with DSG transmission, the predecessor of today's S-Tronic.

Several different models of this generation have been made, such as the Sportback (8PA) which was longer than the standard version of the A3. A new Audi S3 was also made, with an Audi RS 3 as a real bouncer. Of course this one has a lot in common with the Audi TT RS.

The second generation of the A3 is also available as a convertible (soft top) and TDI clubsport quattro. This 2.0 TDI is mainly made to show what the possibilities are, like a lightweight magnesium gearbox, quattro drive, Euro-5 standard and 224 hp power in one car.

This car has been released as a concept car and according to many this would be the forerunner of the new Audi RS3.

The third generation (8V): no visible revolution, but subcutaneously...

The third generation of the Audi A3 was presented in 2012. There was no revolution in appearance, except for the new MQB platform of the Volkswagen Group. However, there are big differences with the predecessors, which can be found in the car itself. These include a panoramic roof, adaptive cruise control, lane assistant and a new location for the MMI system.

There have already been two facelifts of this type. In 2016, a number of exterior features were changed, such as new headlights and the implementation of the Audi Virtual Cockpit. Adjustments were also made to the engine range of the A3 (e.g. the RS3 was fitted with a 400 hp engine). In 2017, the engines were re-examined, as they became more powerful. From the second facelift on, the A3 and S3 models are no longer made in 3-doors.

The (relatively) enormous success of the A3

If we look at Audi's sales figures, we can see that the A3 is a resounding success. Approximately 90,000 copies were sold, which means that the A3 only allows the Audi A4 to be sold above it (120,000 sales).

But if we compare the Audi A3 with its competitors, the picture becomes a little more nuanced:

Model

Number of cars sold in the Netherlands

Opel Astra

Approx. 470.000

Peugeot 307

Approx. 111.000

Audi A3

Approx. 90.000

BMW 1-serie

Approx. 47.000

The success within the Audi line itself is easy to explain. The entry-level model of the Audi A3 was much cheaper as a lower middle class than the entry-level models of the higher ranked types. And since the Audi A3 could also be fully modified by the buyer, it was mainly a car in which you could decide for yourself what exactly you wanted.

When should the Audi A3 windscreen be replaced?

In case of car window damage, it is not always necessary to replace the windscreen of your Audi A3. In some cases, an asterisk can be solved by a windscreen repair, for example. However, if there is a branched crack, then is the windscreen replacement the only correct choice. Is this crack (branched or not) in the driver's field of vision? Then it's a matter of urgency, because this way your A3 won't get through the MOT.

On top of that, driving on with a crack in the field of vision is very risky. Light is reflected in an unpredictable way in cracked glass, which can blind you while driving.

Can I replace my Audi A3 windscreen myself?

Replacing a windscreen is a job that should be left to the experts. Any other car window replacement can be done by yourself when you have enough time and tools. However, since the correct installation of the windscreen is extremely important for your safety and the proper functioning of your vehicle, it is better to have our certified installation partners do the job.

What should I pay attention to when ordering a new windscreen for my Audi A3?

  2. Generation 2: Type 8P: 2003-2012
  3. Generation 3: Type 8V: 2012-present
