The Audi A8 has been in production since 1994 and thousands have been sold in the Netherlands. If you need a windscreen replacement for your Audi A8, there are several possibilities. Choosing after market glass is without a doubt the cheapest solution without compromising on quality. But before we look any further at this, we'll take a closer look at the Audi A8. A special model from Germany where many different firsts can be seen and where Audi had to watch out for the Volkswagen Phaeton. How was that possible?
The first generation of the Audi A8 brings us straight to a nice Trivia fact. The car is built on the D2 platform, the first D platform of the Volkswagen group. Although the Volkswagen Phaeton is built on the D1 platform, the D2 platform is older. Strange guys, those Germans.
The Audi A8 was presented to the public in 1994. Striking achievement is that this spacious sedan has a completely aluminium body. It is the first time that Audi uses its own Audi Space Frame concept (ASF) and this time directly with a car with a fully aluminium platform. The A8 was also produced as an extra-long edition (Audi A8L), which provides much more legroom for the people in the back seat.
The first generation of the Audi A8 got a facelift in 1999. Small things such as the colours, changes in the interior and a larger mirror on the passenger's side were changed.
The second generation of the Audi A8 was launched in 2003. The main focus was on developing a sporty limousine, without immediately becoming an S-series model. Audi had no choice but to develop a sporty limousine. With the Volkswagen Phaeton, the Volkswagen group already had a comfortable limousine that was well on the market. And since Audi is part of the same Volkswagen group, they couldn't compete with this model.
That's why Audi focused on LED technology for the car's headlights, FSI injection technology for the petrol engines and common-rail injection for the diesel engines to create a sporty model. Since the second generation of the A8 is bigger, it's not surprising that the engines also got a little more power.
The facelift from 2007 was not much, in terms of the engines. The basic engine became a 2.8-litre V6 FSIe. And it's all about the 'e'. Audi had to work with the engines, because there was a lot of criticism on the inefficient cars of the brand. With the e-series in the engine range, the Audi A8 models also became much more efficient and emissions were reduced.
The third generation of the A8 is built on the MPL platform, using ASF technology to keep the weight as low as possible. The wheelbase of this model is just under 3 metres, bringing the total length to well over 5 metres. The third generation comes standard with four-wheel drive (quattro) with the well-known 40:60 ratio.
This model is also available as an extra-long version (Audi A8L) for the Chinese market, with a completely redesigned W12 engine that ensures that this enormous beast can get from 0 to 100 within five seconds. In addition, the consumption of the new engine is more than ten percent lower than the previous version of the W12 engine.
The fourth generation (2017) of the Audi A8 looks particularly futuristic thanks to the inspiration of the Audi A9, which is clearly visible in the Audi A8 D5. Although the latest generation is bigger, the weight is lower than the weight of its predecessors. The biggest differences are mainly due to the looks and technical features of the car itself. For example, two touchscreens in the Audi A8 allow you to manage most of the functions.
But Audi remains Audi. You can equip the latest Audi A8 with various options, such as a Bang & Olufsen audio system (more or less Audi's showpiece), special leather on the seats and special comfort seats. Each and every one of these options allows you to make the Audi A8 as expensive as you want it to be.
The Audi A8 is a pioneer in many areas and has given Audi a platform to do what it likes to do: make strong, luxurious and comfortable cars. The fact that the market for the Volkswagen Phaeton had to be avoided has undoubtedly had consequences for the sales figures.
Nevertheless, almost 4000 copies of the Audi A8 were sold in the Netherlands, a remarkable amount for a car in the higher segment that is still being produced. After all, the fourth generation is not that old yet.
The windscreen of your Audi A8 needs to be replaced if there is any damage to the windscreen in the driver's field of vision. Driving with a crack in the windscreen is dangerous because light can be reflected in a strange way and this leads to glare. In addition, windscreen damage on a luxurious car like the Audi A8 is just a thorn in the side.
