Cost windscreen replacement of your Audi R8

The Audi R8 is a striking sports car from the German car manufacturer. It is a very exclusive model and you will notice this when the windscreen of this car has to be replaced. The cost of the windscreen replacement is very high when you have it done by your dealer. If you choose an after market windscreen, the costs are much lower. Before we go into this in more detail, we'll put Audi's special sports model in the spotlight and look at why this car hasn't even been sold 100 times in the Netherlands.

The Audi R8, not an ordinary car and certainly not suitable for everyone

Audi has always been the car manufacturer where more luxurious and more comfortable models come from the factories. But with the Audi R8 a completely different market has been served: the sports car market. For once the R8 did not use any standard platforms from Volkswagen, as was the case for the complete Audi Q-series. No, the Audi R8 descends from the R8 racing car that won the Le Mans 24 Hours no less than five times. The R8 racing car comes from 2003, the Audi R8 was only presented to the public in 2006.

Since the R8 is a sports car in heart and soul, it is made in Neckarsulm (Germany), where Audi manufactures all sports cars.

The first generation with lots of Lamborghini

The first generation of the Audi R8 was first sold in 2007. The model alone shows a strong affinity with Lamborghini (owned by Audi). The Germans didn't stop there; no less than 15% of all parts were borrowed from the Lamborghini Gallardo. This resulted in a sporty car with an aggressive appearance. Another consequence: the introduction price of no less than € 180,000 for a model without any options.

A number of features of the first generation Audi R8 in a row:

  1. Quattro four-wheel drive
  2. No less than 75 litres of tank capacity
  3. Lightweight thanks to the Audi Space Frame concept (lots of aluminium, little steel)
  4. Also released as a diesel version (based on the Audi R10
car for Le Mans and the same engine as in the Audi Q7)
  5. Facelift in 2012 that didn't really offer much in terms of appearance or technical adjustments

The question is not whether this is a sports car or not. The top speed of the Audi R8 5.2 FSI-Plus is at a sloppy 317 kilometres per hour (197 mph) which it can compete with many a racing car on a circuit.

The second generation with a lot of versions

If you thought that the R8 had been given the name because of the Audi V8 engine, you wouldn't be able to defend it in the second generation. The new generation that became available in 2016 is also called Audi R8 and has a V10 engine. This version is not available as a manual car, all models are equipped with the 7-stage S-Tronic. This version is no longer related to the Gallardo - Audi decided to look at the Lamborghini Huracán for the new generation.

Audi then decided to show how big the muscles of the manufacturer really are. The R8 V10 RWS, for example, shouldn't be missing when it comes to the R8, because this is the very first type that doesn't have four-wheel drive. The V10 RWS has rear-wheel drive. It remains a rare appearance as only 999 models have been made of it.

Another striking type is the R8 V10 FSI-Plus. Indeed, the car with a top speed of 317 kilometres per hour. That's not all that can be said about this type, because this model also has 610 horsepower, a torque of an impressive 560 Nm and weighs only 1530 kilos. The result: from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in just over three seconds.

And then Audi made a slip

Audi, the manufacturer who received a lot of criticism about the inefficient cars and high emissions, saw that the sales figures of the impressive R8 models were lagging behind and decided to make an e-tron version of the R8. This way, the model had to be brought back to the market. The R8 e-tron has a theoretical range of 450 kilometres and was only delivered to order. Problematic, because those orders were not forthcoming. A sporty car with e-tron is not what the Audi driver wanted: the total circulation never reached 100 pieces.

Has the Audi R8 flopped?

Who looks at the sales figures of the Audi R8, is inclined to say that this model has completely failed. Yes, there are indeed less than 70 models sold in the Netherlands. This is still more than the direct competitors of this brand:

  • McLaren 540C was sold 0 times in the Netherlands.
  • Lamborghini Huracán
(precisely, the source of inspiration) was sold 23 times

But models like the Audi R8 are not about sales or market share. On the one hand it's a way for Audi to show what it can do and offers a platform for testing new features, like the R-Tronic that was borrowed from Lamborghini. On the other hand it is the car for people who want to drive expensive and exclusive sports cars. And then you don't make thousands of sales, but you do achieve this:

When should an Audi R8 windscreen be replaced?

A star or asterisk in the windscreen is no reason to immediately look for a new windscreen. Unless you have an Audi R8. Chances are that with any damage you will immediately look for the best possible way to repair it. The car window replacement is always mandatory when there is window damage in the field of vision of the driver or when there is a branched crack in the windscreen.

Can I replace my Audi R8 windscreen myself?

Absolutely not. Replacing windscreens is a job for the people who have a lot of experience with it and who know what to look out for. This is why a windscreen replacement for an Audi R8 is always done by experts. It may cost a little more, but it does ensure that your R8 keeps its value and that you can always drive safely.

How can I save on a new Audi R8 windscreen?

You can save on costs if you have a crack in the windscreen by choosing after market automotive glass. This is a car window that meets exactly the same requirements as the branded windows that your dealer has. But after market automotive glass does not have a brand logo and therefore the costs are much lower. Another difference: all our certified assembly partners are allowed to offer after market car windows, at a more competitive rate than an Audi dealer. An example of the prices for a new after market windscreen
