The first BMW 8-Series was launched in 1990. Preparations for this model began as early as 1981, but it took BMW nine years to get from the initial ideas to actual production. The new model was to be positioned above the E24 6-Series models, with better performance and therefore a higher price. This was the first car for road use with a V12 engine and a 6-speed gearbox.
Disappointing sales led to the early death of the first generation. It was clear that BMW had to go back to the drawing board; in fact, it would be 9 years before BMW would try again with the second generation, which first hit dealerships in 2018.
Initially, the second generation was only offered as a convertible, but the four-door Gran Coupé soon followed. Like the flagship BMW 7-Series, the BMW 8-Series is exclusively produced and assembled in Dingolfing. With the second generation of the BMW 8-Series, BMW entered the fray against other high-end competitors such as the Mercedes-AMG GT and the Porsche Panamera.
At the moment, the sales counter of the BMW 8-Series stands at a paltry 500+ sales in the Netherlands. This is not very surprising for a car in the top segment. The success of the 8-Series is due to its high price, the large demand for SUVs instead of Grand Tourers and of course another fact should not be overlooked. The BMW 8-Series is a luxurious, stylish car that does 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in 3 seconds and is full of technology... but BMW already has many more such models on the market, such as the luxury version of the BMW 7-Series, the luxury version of the BMW X7 and numerous other models.
Chances are that BMW knew that too, because in the promotional video it mainly comes across that the BMW 8-Series is the car for the conscious consumer, and that you can park the car in your house.
Although we have to admit that BMW's announcement of the BMW M8 Gran Coupé was even more mediocre. Are you a well-dressed man, do you live in the north of Norway and do you like to drive a very expensive car over frozen lakes, then this is the car for you'.
Damage to the windscreen is annoying, but in far from all cases this means that the windscreen has to be replaced. In most cases, you can just keep on driving. The two situations in which a windscreen needs replacing are when there is a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres and when there is a branching crack. This is a rejection for the MOT when the windscreen damage is in the driver's field of vision.
Chips and cracks in other places are no reason for disapproval. So you can just drive on with a chip or crack in the windscreen. However, it is wise to keep an eye on the damage because a damaged window can crack further.
