The BMW i8 was born out of a collaboration with Vision EfficientDynamics. The predecessors of the i8 are thus the concept car BMW Vision EfficientDynamics and the BMW ActiveE. The development of the car relied heavily on the design of the BMW M1 Homage, which in turn paid homage to the BMW M1. The official successors to the i8 are the BMW 8-Series and the BMW M8 (the high-end version of the 8-Series).
