In 2002, the BMW Z4 was launched, the successor of the successful BMW Z3, taking into account the criticism of the design of its predecessor. At the time of writing, there are three different models of the BMW Z4 on the market; the E85/86, the E89 and the G29, which are the first, second and third generation of the BMW Z4 respectively. Before we take a closer look at the low price of our new car windows, let's have a look at this particularly sporty model from BMW which, despite its luxury character and corresponding price, has been a great success.
The BMW Z4 is the direct successor of the BMW Z3. The predecessor was already a success, but received quite a bit of criticism for its design. Therefore BMW decided to make the Z4 longer with a considerably stiffer chassis. At first, only a roadster (convertible) was marketed, but in 2006 a coupé version of the BMW Z4 also appeared in the dealers.
In 2009, the E89, or second generation, became available. This was the first Z-version with a folding roof, whereby the distinction between the convertible and the coupé disappeared. The roof takes about 20 seconds to fold away or put on, and it consists of two lightweight aluminium parts.
In 2018, BMW launched the third generation (G29), returning to the roof of the E85. The advantage is that now only 10 seconds are needed to make the roof disappear. By the way, the G29 uses the same platform as the Toyota Supra and is made in the same factory in Austria.
A page about the BMW Z4 has to include the BMW Z4 M as well. This extremely luxurious sports model with 18-inch rims, double exhaust and larger air intake at the front is rightfully a German pearl. A violent pearl by the way, because the power of the car (which weighs only 1500 kilos) is considerably greater than you can ever use on Dutch or Belgian motorways.
The calibre of the car cannot be expressed in words. That's why we gladly leave it to Hammond, who put the BMW Z4 M up against the Porsche Boxster S in an interesting video with lots of growling engine sounds.
Of course, these figures do not come close to the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 5 Series or the BMW 1 Series, which close the top three, but the BMW Z4 was never developed for that purpose. It's not a commuter car or a shopping trolley, it's a model you buy because you have the money for it and want to enjoy the German awesomeness under the bonnet, along with an air of luxury and comfort while driving.
Window damage is annoying, especially when it involves the windscreen. In most cases, you can continue to drive with a chip or crack in your windscreen. It is only disapproved by the MOT when the damage concerns a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres or a branched crack in the driver's field of vision.
Is the windscreen damage more limited or is it outside the driver's field of vision? Then you can just drive on. But it's wise to keep an eye on the window damage, because a damaged windscreen can crack further.
A new windscreen for the BMW Z4 is available for as little as € 329. That is not the price your BMW dealer charges; it is the price for after market automotive glass that is made in the same factories, but without the brand logo and therefore much cheaper.
