The electric Dacia Spring caused quite a stir at its launch. For quite some time, it was the cheapest EV on the European market and it stirred up a lot of tongues. Supporters and detractors of the model all had more than enough to say about the cheap electric car which undeniably contributed to its success. Indeed, it has become one of the Romanian carmaker's biggest successes.
Do you have a Dacia Spring and need a windscreen replacement? Then you can come to us for competitively priced windscreens that are identical in terms of quality to the automotive glass at your brand dealer. Before we look at windscreens, let's put Dacia's special Spring under the microscope.
Although the Dacia Spring was a new model on the European market, the type's history is considerably older when we look at Asia. Indeed, there Renault put the Renault Kwid on the Indian market back in 2015, only to ship an improved model to South American markets 2 years later and then put the Renault City K-ZE (often abbreviated to Renault K-ZE) as an all-electric car on the markets in 2019. These models would never come to Europe, partly because there was no market for them according to the carmaker and because the models did not meet safety requirements, which are simply significantly higher in Europe.
To still tap into a European market share with the model, Dacia was enlisted to put down the Dacia Spring in 2021. The model should have been shown at the 2020 auto show, but it fell through due to corona measures. The main achievements of the 'new' model were the reinforced chassis, six airbags and ADAS systems, which together were supposed to make the car compliant.
At launch, the Dacia Spring was the cheapest electric car on the European market. And, fair is fair, it is clear where the low price came from. Not only did Dacia use all the know-how and parts from Renault's Kwid and K-ZE, it also skimped on the space inside the car, the materials used and even the engine fell victim to skimping. Indeed, the 27.4 kWh electric motor with a WLTP range of just 230 kilometres takes 20 (!) seconds to get from standstill to 100 kilometres per hour. Although the car has only 970 kilograms unladen weight, the 44 horses of the electric motor are simply meagre.
With this comes an additional disadvantage for people who want to use the EV on a daily basis. This is because the Spring cannot fast charge, unless you choose to buy the 30 kW CCS fast charger as an option with it. Although this is by far the slowest fast charger on the market, the limited size of the battery pack means you can still be on the road fully charged in 15 minutes.
The Dacia Spring does not surprise, except when you look solely at the price and do not try to take a seat in the back seat or look at the car's interior. Dacia was asked to make the Kwid/K-ZE comply with European directives and market it and that is exactly what the Romanians did. The model became a huge success and for a short time could even compete with the Tesla Model 3.
At the time of writing, Dacia and Renault are working on a more modern version of the Spring for 2024, which should make it better suited to the market and compete with currently popular models. However, the question is to what extent affordable solutions should pull Renault/Dacia into the competition with brands like Volvo, Volkswagen, Kia and Tesla.
The rules regarding windscreen damage are the same for all cars on Dutch roads. This means that the windscreen of your Dacia Spring has to be replaced when there is a branched crack or a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres in the driver's field of vision. In all other cases, you can continue driving with the damage in the windscreen and it will not be a reason for rejection at the MOT. Of course, it is wise to keep an eye on whether the chipped windscreen is not disturbing or annoying while driving.
If you opt for an after market windscreen for your Dacia Spring, it will cost €329. That's considerably cheaper than the prices your Dacia dealer will quote you, and there's a good reason for that. Car windows at the dealer are branded with a brand logo, which ensures that you, the customer, are paying for exclusivity. Our windscreens are made in the same factories and the quality of the automotive glass is identical. Because our windscreens do not feature an unnecessary brand logo that does nothing for the glass, we can price our Dacia Spring windscreens significantly cheaper.
