Plans to make the Fiat 500L were on the table at Fiat back in 2010, some 3 years after the Fiat 500, which by then had already become an incredible success. The idea was to bring in the Fiat 500L as the successor to the Fiat Idea, which would go out of production in 2012. To appeal to a broad market, the 500L was immediately launched in two versions in 2012, a 5- and 7-seater.
The Fiat 500L was put on the ‘Small´ platform, the platform developed for the Fiat Grande Punto, but the 500L is wider and longer. Production of the model took place in Serbia at a site where Fiat had invested more than €1 billion over two years to enable large-scale production.
In 2017, the model received a facelift in which the exterior was slightly modified, the interior was modernised (including a large display screen as an instrument panel that replaced the LCD screen. The Fiat 500L Wagon became the new name for the 7-seater during the update.
The Fiat 500L has been the best-selling car model in Serbia in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. That was already a nice start for Fiat, which moved its planned production from Turin to Serbia and then gained quite a bit of market share in return. By the way, the Fiat 500L has become a big success in Europe anyway, although its biggest success would be mainly in Italy itself. Not very surprising, by the way, as Fiat has emphasised Italian character and pride in all versions of the Fiat 500. So also with the 500L, although it was not even built in Italy.
