This model has been in production since 1980 and the sales counter is creeping towards the 8 million mark at the time of writing, but it has been the first generation with which the Italians managed to win the biggest success. The first generation of the Fiat Panda in 1980

The Fiat Panda began as a cheap, simple city car with a particularly angular design. The main objective was to market an affordable model with a low price and low maintenance costs, but at the same time a robust model that would last for years. The first models were launched in 1979 in Italy, right-hand-drive Europe would follow in 1980 and Britain a year later.

The model did not come out of the blue, by the way. Designers started as early as 1976 and for three years constant design, development and adjustments were made to achieve all the model's goals. And it paid off, because after showing the model at a motor show, Fiat immediately received 70,000 (!) orders.

But what can we best call the design? Basically a practical combination between the Renault 4 and the Citroën 2CV, where everything was about developing a car that had to do exactly what a car should do, without incurring high costs.

 
Everything was done to save money. From new designs for the seats to using lighter materials, and using the engines from the Fiat 126 and Fiat 127.
It was notable, however, that Fiat did choose to market special models right away, such as the Fiat Panda 34 with a water-cooled 843cc, which was specially developed for Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands. A 4x4 version also came in 1983, equipped with a 965cc engine.

 

In 1986, Fiat decided to change tack. The new model became somewhat less angular after the facelift, was fitted with a different chassis and some mechanical changes were also made. A 1301cc diesel engine was added to the range, the suspension was modified and a Fiat Panda Van was even launched, a version that could be called even more special than the Fiat Multipla.

 

1991, another facelift

The 1991 facelift was less drastic. Fiat opted for a new grille and went to work on the different equipment levels to create a wider and better range of models. Also, significantly more powerful engines came into the models, both choices would contribute greatly to the success of the Panda.

Yet this would be the beginning of the end. In 1995, production of the Fiat Panda was stopped in Britain, and after 23 years of production, the plug was also pulled on the Panda in Italy in 2003.

2003: a second generation of the Panda after all

Indeed, the second generation that saw the light of day in 2003 had quite little in common with the first generation. It was a completely new model that was actually supposed to be called Fiat Gingo (but was not allowed by Renault, which thought it was too similar to the Renault Twingo). Fiat therefore decided to call the new model the second generation of the Fiat Panda. Incidentally, this is also directly why the first generation is the model's success generation.

The second generation is no longer a small city car, but a mini MPV/SUV and, partly for this reason, also became a huge success, much to the relief of Fiat, which was having major financial problems. As early as 2011, specimen 2 million rolled out of the factories, also making the second generation of the Fiat Panda a success.

The third generation in 2011

There would be several more facelifts for the second generation, but these mainly involved minor adjustments and expansion of the model range. It wasn't until 2011 that the big changes came in the form of the third generation of the Fiat Panda. This generation was built on the Fiat Mini platform, but the second generation also simply remained in production (with the modified name Fiat Panda Classic), as the model was still very much in demand.

The Fiat Panda: numerous versions and special models

The Fiat Panda has become incredibly popular and this has led to a long list of special versions and models launched under this name. There are too many to name them all, so we have highlighted a few highlights from the list.

  • Fiat Panda Italia 90: as a major sponsor of the 1990 World Cup, Fiat released a special Italia 90 version and these would even appear in Juventus‘ stadium, bearing the players’ names.
  • Panda Elettra (1990 model): a 14 kW battery was used to make an electric version as early as 1990. However, the weak battery took over 8 hours to fully charge on alternating current, making this model primarily a test rather than a useful model.
  • Fiat Panda Hydrogen: the hydrogen-powered version of the Panda.
  • Fiat Panda Tanker: a model made in collaboration with Dainese, as a 3-door and a particularly robust and tough look.
  • Fiat PanDAKAR: a model for the Dakar Rally, with the name playfully adapted.

The stunning success of the simple Fiat Panda

At the time of writing, the sales counter of the Fiat Panda is heading towards 8 million, making the model's success more than obvious. However, the first generation of the Panda has still been by far the most successful. Looking at the Netherlands, we see exactly the same picture here. Indeed, the Panda tops the list of Fiat's best-selling models in the Netherlands, ahead of the Fiat Punto and Fiat Uno.

 
Yet we should not compare the almost 200,000 units sold
against Fiat's own models, but rather against its biggest competitor within the market segment. That is the Ford Escort, which has sold almost one and a half times as many in the Netherlands as the Fiat Panda. But that the Panda could still come so close is probably reason for Fiat to hang the garlands.
