Cheap windscreen replacement for your Ford Econoline (Ford E-Series)

Few car models from America can match the iconic status of the Ford E-Series, which has come to market in an incredible number of versions over a period of more than 60 years. The Ford Econoline, Ford Ecovan and Ford Club Wagon (all Ford E-Series) have played a major role for Ford and are still in daily use worldwide.

Do you have a Ford Econoline and need a windscreen replacement? Then of course you will find new car windows with the best value for money with us. Before looking at our cheap automotive glass, Ford's E-Series gets the space it amply deserves.

More than 60 years of production across four generations for Ford's E-Series

The first Ford E-Series model hit the market back in 1961, and at the time of writing, the series is still in production. The Ford Econoline had to fill big shoes, as it was the successor to the Ford F-Series. Therefore, the Americans immediately marketed numerous variants, including commercial and van models. The model was even marketed as a chassis without any additional additions, so a customised model could be put together.

Numerous diverse models and variants on the market

The US market for models like the Econoline was well occupied thanks to the Chevrolet Corvair Van and the Volkswagen Transporter. As early as 1957, Ford began developing the model that was supposed to pull the competition in Ford's favour, drawing much inspiration from the Chevrolet Van and the Dodge A100. Unlike its competitors (who placed the engine in the back of the models), Ford decided to place the engine between the front seats, partly to optimise weight distribution.

The first Ford Econoline models were based on the offering of the Ford Falcon and received an 85 hp engine (the Falcon's standard engine), although a 101 hp version was also available. In terms of sheet metal and other design, it borrowed heavily from the Volkswagen Type 2. The Ford Econoline immediately entered the market in several versions, including an 8-door version, a standard 6-door van, a Super Van that was considerably longer and a model in 1964 that did not get rear doors at all.

The first generation ran until 1968, although the introduction of the second generation was delayed by a four-month strike. With the second generation, ties with the Falcon were finally really cut and the Ford Econoline became a model ready for heavier duty. The engine was also moved further forward: it now sat under the windscreen.

In 1975 came the third generation, which would continue until 1991. This was when the Ford Econoline would be completely redesigned, including a new chassis. This third generation would become very popular not only as a complete model, but also as a chassis base for numerous other vehicles. Thus, numerous ambulances, trucks and buses were made with the chassis of the third-generation Ford Econoline. The platform, of course, was the Ford VN Platform.

In 1992 the fourth generation came next, which at the time of writing is still the current generation. The chassis was largely retained, but the rest was modified (mainly modernised, as the model had become outdated). In 1999, the name 'Ford Econoline' would be dropped and replaced by 'Ford E-Series', which better suited the US carmaker's model range.

In 2015, many of the models within the E-Series were removed from the range and replaced by the Ford Transit, which was also in its fourth generation at the time.

An unprecedented sales success for Ford with more than 8 million sales

Within the market segment, the Ford Econoline has scored incredibly well and is in third place, with a whopping 8.2 million units sold at the moment. Ford will not be sad about that, as the Econoline has to beat the Ford Transit, among others. The other big name is the Volkswagen Transporter. In addition, Ford's E-Series is extremely popular on the used market and there are always people around the world tinkering to make the Econoline another unique project.

Its success is partly due to its clever design and looking at the flaws of competing models that were driving in the US and Europe at the time. This becomes especially clear when you see one of the original commercials that aired in 1964, the main purpose of which is to point out what the Econoline does have (and its competitors do not).

When does the windscreen on your Ford Econoline need replacing?

Do you have a Ford Econoline with windscreen damage or are you looking at a used car but the windscreen is no longer intact? Then it's good to know that the windscreen does not have to be replaced in all cases by a long shot. The Econoline will only be rejected if the damage to the windscreen is within the driver's field of vision and if it concerns a branched crack or a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres. In all other cases, the Ford simply passes the inspection, although it is wise to take a critical look at the extent to which the window damage is annoying while driving. Not only can windscreen damage be distracting, it also causes incoming light to be reflected in unpredictable ways.

What does a new windscreen for the Ford Econoline cost?

If you are looking for a new windscreen for the fourth-generation Ford Econoline, you will find one with us starting from €629. This price does not include delivery and/or fitting, but does include VAT. Of course, you can also choose to order the new windscreen without fitting, for example if you want to replace the windscreen yourself or if you have a garage. When you enter your preferences on the product page, the page immediately shows the total price.

Can you replace the Ford E-Series windscreen yourself?

Windscreen replacement is a job for specialists, especially with larger windscreens like the Ford Econoline.
