Cheap windscreen replacement for your Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer has been an important model for Ford, constantly seeking out and challenging the competition. The now six generations of this model have become a major sales success in America and the Ford Explorer has also been a success in Europe, albeit on a considerably smaller scale. Do you own one of the models and need to replace the windscreen of your Ford Explorer? Then you will find cheap automotive glass with the best quality with us. Before we surprise you with the price of an after market windscreen for your Ford Explorer, let's take a look at this particular model that has undergone considerable development.

1990: the Ford Explorer as Ford's first 4-door SUV

In March 1990, the Ford Explorer entered the market (as the 1991 model year) and it replaced the Bronco II. The model was very similar to the Ford Ranger, but was a true family SUV that also performed well off-road. It was Ford's first SUV that was also marketed as a 4-door and had to compete with the Jeep Cherokee and the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, both of which received a lot of attention in the US car market.

Ford paid particular attention to space inside the car to connect well with families looking for a spacious SUV. Therefore, more space was made for the rear seats and the spare wheel was removed to have more room in the boot. The Explorer was also fitted with a folding rear window, just like the estate version of the Ford Taurus. To attract the interest of the average American at the same time, Ford put a 4.0-litre engine block in the Explorer with 155 hp. In 1993, this even became 160 hp.

1995, the second generation

With the second generation in 1995, the design was changed significantly, making it easier to distinguish the model from the Ford Ranger. Ford also opted for an even larger (4.9-litre) optional engine under the hood, to take market share away from the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Explorer also got two front airbags, something that was unique as it was the first US SUV with dual airbags.

A completely new chassis for the third generation in 2002

When the third generation of the Explorer entered the market in 2001 (2002 model year), Ford dropped the 3-door completely and only made 5-door models. With this generation, Ford wanted to ensure that the Explorer would market better both domestically and outside the US. The idea was mainly to make it more difficult for the Lexus RX300 and the Volkswagen Touareg, which at the time had not yet been released but had been announced.

Curiously, Ford retained the fuel-guzzling 4.0-litre V6 as standard, with a 4.6-litre Modular V8 with a whopping 239bhp as an option. It also found that there was a lot of work to be done on safety, as the model rolled over too easily. So Ford decided to widen the axles, put different tyres under the models and offer AdvanceTrac (and later AdvanceTrac Roll Stability Control) as an option for the models.

A new frame for the Ford Explorer in 2006

In 2006 came a new version of the Ford Explorer (and its little brother the Mercury Mountaineer) opting for a stronger chassis and many more features to modernise the model, including tyre pressure sensors and a heated windscreen, but retained the original 4.0-litre as the standard engine for the model. This was not very surprising, by the way, because despite its high fuel consumption, the Explorer was still unprecedentedly popular in the United States, and the third generation with this engine also found eager demand. The fourth generation of the model would remain in production until the end of 2010, after which a major turnaround would come for the Explorer.

Fifth generation: from an SUV to a crossover on the D4 platform

In 2011, the Explorer left the U1 platform and was built on the D4 platform, which would make it a crossover and prevent Ford from having an SUV on the market until mid-2020 (sixth generation of the Ford Bronco). The Explorer's 'new' design had much in common with the Ford Flex, Ford Edge, Ford Escape and the Ford F-150, which would mark a new design style for the US carmaker.

The fifth generation received a major facelift in 2016 that saw changes to the front and rear, with the lights in particular showing a big difference. The 2.3-litre EcoBoost 4-cylinder (from the Ford Mustang) was also added to the engine range. Further updates came in 2018 and 2019, followed by the sixth generation of the Ford Explorer in 2020. It was put on the CD6 platform and got the 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo as standard engine (300 hp and 420 Nm of torque). Focusing on fuel economy, Ford chose to also launch an Explorer Hybrid in the US and a plug-in hybrid for the European market (13.6 kWh battery). With this, the large Explorer was supposed to better match the demand in the European market (which indeed it did and caused increasing sales numbers, including in the Netherlands).

The Ford Explorer's sales success in the United States

In 2020, the Ford Explorer was found to be the best-selling SUV ever in America, and this picture is distorted because this does not even take into account the models Mazda, Mercury and Lincoln made from the Explorer they were supplied with, which often became Explorer models in disguise under a different name. In Europe, the Explorer also became a success, but the high fuel consumption of the first generations inhibited this. Some 500 units of the Ford Explorer have currently been sold
in the Netherlands at the time of writing.

When should the windscreen of a Ford Explorer be replaced?

The windscreen of your Ford Explorer should be replaced when there is window damage in the driver's field of vision and this is a branched crack, or a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres. In these cases, windscreen repair is not possible and the chipped windscreen is a reason for rejection at the MOT.

In all other cases of windscreen damage, you can continue to drive your Explorer and the damage to the windscreen will not be a reject during the inspection. However, it is wise to keep an eye on the windscreen damage, as large temperature differences between both sides of the automotive glass can cause the window to crack further. Also, always opt for windscreen replacement if the glass damage is obstructing your vision.

What does a new Ford Explorer windscreen cost?

You can already have a new windscreen for your Ford Explorer for € 399. This price excludes fitting and delivery and includes VAT. This price is much lower than the price suggested by your Ford dealer, while the quality of the automotive glass is identical. The big difference is in the brand logo of the original Ford windscreens. That logo makes the automotive glass exclusive, but does nothing else for the windscreen itself. That is why you will find automotive glass with the best value for money on the after market. The price difference is so great that our new windscreens are even cheaper than most second-hand windscreens for the Explorer from Ford.
