Cheap windscreen replacement for your Ford Sierra

The Ford Sierra is a distinctive model with a special history in the books of the American carmaker. Despite a bad start and many setbacks, the Sierra became a very popular model that is still in high demand on the used market, partly because of its rear-wheel drive. Do you have a Ford Sierra with windscreen damage or do you have an occasion in mind whose windscreen needs replacing? Then you can find new Sierra windscreens for €299 with us.

Before we look at our cheap automotive glass for the Sierra, let's dive into the history of this model.

Ford Sierra, the first Ford with 'modern' streamlining

The story of the Sierra is a separate, distinctive and even somewhat strange one. Ford decided to pay more attention to aerodynamics, something the Ford Cortina, the Sierra's predecessor, still completely lacked. With this, the new model's fuel consumption would be much lower, which was supposed to appeal to car users, who saw oil prices rising by the week. Yet that proved not to be the case, as people in Britain in particular were highly critical of the design, which was not at all to their liking. Interestingly, the Audi 100, also featuring modern streamlining, did become a resounding success.

Although the Sierra did sell well in other parts of Europe (especially in West Germany), Ford decided to put the three big names in the design process (Uwe Bahnsen, Robert Lutz and Patrick le Quément) out on the street and look again at the design and the possibilities of pulling the model out of the mire.

In retrospect, that all turned out to be completely unnecessary, as less than five years after the disappointing results, the Sierra caught on across Europe and sales figures skyrocketed. Ford had to put a lot of work into that, though, as the UK market in particular has always been a major focus for Ford.

The classic that was in production from 1982 to 1993

To better connect with that market, Ford relatively quickly came out with the saloon version of the Sierra and expanded the engine range, which immediately caused upward sales statistics. It became a race between the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier (Opel Ascona/Opel Vectra) that Vauxhall would eventually win, but even in 1992, the Sierra was still in the top five best-selling cars, and that is something Ford was allowed to celebrate.

In 1993, the Ford Sierra was replaced by the Ford Mondeo, although the Sierra remained at dealerships for another two years (mainly to sell stock).

The Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500, a monster with a clear purpose

Between 1986 and 1992, Ford (part: Ford Motorsport) created a beast of a Sierra in the form of the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500, a model that had to win every Group A race. As the name suggests, this model was a collaboration between Ford and Cosworth, which developed a special engine (the YAA engine) for Ford's 16-valve T88 engine block.

That wasn't enough. Ford wanted a turbocharged 180hp for the street model and 300hp for the race version, which Cosworth agreed to on a number of conditions. One of the conditions was that Ford would take delivery of 15,000 engines (while it only needed 5,000), but the carmaker agreed immediately. The extra engines were then used for the second generation four-door Sierra RS Cosworth, which was developed partly to fit the remaining 10,000 engines somewhere.

The Ford Sierra is fully justified in being called one of the American car brand's classics. This is also reflected in the sales figures in the Netherlands, because although this is a larger family car, the Sierra is fifth on the list of Ford's best-selling models in the Netherlands. Nearly 150,000 units
were sold, narrowly losing out to the Ford Mondeo (175,000)
and far ahead of the Ford Focus (270,000),
but ahead of the Ford Ka (with 128,000 models sold).

However, the Sierra's popularity has always had a brake, partly due to Ford's own management. For instance, during the Sierra's launch period, the carmaker decided to dump its (particularly large) stock of Ford Cortinas on the market at steep discounts, and the first batch of the Ford Sierra had significant teething problems, such as instability at higher speeds. Nevertheless, the marketing machine, an element of Ford that ensured the brand's huge successes, continued to work at full speed, with unique advertisements such as one of the original promotional videos you can see below.

When should the windscreen of your Ford Sierra be replaced?

Nobody likes the sound of a pebble damaging their windscreen, but at the same time, windscreen damage is inevitable when you use your car regularly. In far from all cases, however, you need to look for a new windscreen right away, as most people just keep on driving with a chipped windscreen. There are two cases where the Ford Sierra windscreen does need to be replaced. These involve damage in the driver's field of vision, involving a chip at least 20 millimetres in diameter or a branched crack.

Your car will not pass the inspection with this window damage because the extent of the damage poses risks. For instance, you may be distracted while driving, the damage obstructs your view of the road and incoming light may be reflected in unpredictable ways, meaning you may suddenly be blinded while driving.

What does a new Ford Sierra windscreen cost?

You already have a new Ford Sierra windscreen for €299, including VAT and excluding fitting and delivery. That's significantly cheaper than the automotive glass at your Ford dealer, who only offers branded windscreens. We don't. Our after market windscreens for the Ford Sierra are of the same quality, but because there is no exclusive logo in the car window, the price is much lower. The price difference is so great that our new windscreens are often even cheaper the second-hand windscreens for the Sierra.

Can you replace the windscreen of your Ford Sierra yourself?

Car windscreen replacement may not be rocket science, but it is a job that needs to be done accurately in the right way to avoid damage to the car, the new window and yourself. We strongly advise against replacing the windscreen of your Ford Sierra yourself if you have little or no knowledge of windscreen replacement.

To make it easier for you, we work with certified fitting partners. They replace windscreens on location throughout the Netherlands and Belgium, so you can get your Sierra back on the road safely in no time.

Are you a garage owner or a windscreen replacement expert? Then you can also come to us for new, replacement car windows excluding fitting. You can also choose to collect your order yourself (by appointment) to save even more on costs. We supply numerous companies and of course provide you with a receipt that can go straight to the accountant to get the VAT refund.
