The Hummer H3 was General Motors' attempt to give the Hummer line more prominently. The smaller model had to enter the market and be more practical than its predecessors, which to some extent it succeeded. The Hummer H3 entered the market in 2005 as a 5-door SUV and later also as a pick-up, under the name Hummer H3T. It is the smallest Hummer in the series from General Motors, and the only Hummer not designed by AM General. The Hummer H3 leans heavily on the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canon, but shares less than 10% of its parts with those models, which does make it a stand-alone, unique model.
Like its predecessors, the H3 has luxury base equipment and numerous options, making it a premium model in the upper market segment. At the same time, GM lowered the standard slightly, probably to make the price tag just a little more interesting for the average car owner. What the Hummer H3 has become especially known for is its all-wheel drive with superior technology to ensure that this is one of the few car models for driving on and off the road (off-road). Another feature that caused a stir was the towing capacity of more than 2,700 kilos (exclusively for the V8 automatic).
In 2009, a plug-in hybrid version of the Hummer H3 was launched, made by Raser Technologies. This model would be used by Arnold Schwarzenegger to encourage greener cars, a fairly ironic choice given the average fuel consumption of the other Hummer models.
The Hummer H3 was the last Hummer to roll out of the General Motors factories. On 24 May 2010, the curtain finally fell on the model line.
