Windscreen replacement of your Renault 21 at low cost

The Renault 21 (or R21) is one of Renault's older models. Production started in 1986 and the car became a great success within a short period of time. That was necessary. Renault needed a success in the market in which the R21 was placed, because the R18 would prove to be less and less popular and needed to be replaced.

Do you have a Renault R21 and do you have windscreen damage? Then this may mean a windscreen replacement for your Renault 21. You can find attractively priced windscreens on the after market that have the same quality as the windscreens at your Renault dealer. How this is possible is described after looking at this successful Renault model of which more than 2 million copies have been produced.

The first generation of the R21 in 1986

The Renault 21 was shown to the public in 1985. Three months later, the first models rolled off the dealers' car parks. It was February 1986 and the introduction of the new model came nothing too soon for Renault. The successful model R18
lost a lot of popularity, because after eight years of production the model was out of date. Renault took up the competition again with the other models in this segment, including the Opel Ascona and the Ford Sierra.

It is striking that the R21 was launched with two different engine designs. The 1.7 litre is located transverse under the bonnet. All stronger engines were placed lengthwise. The reason behind this is quite clever (but appropriate for the time of production): Renault had no gearboxes that were suitable for the stronger engines when placed transversely. That's why the French had to choose to place these engines lengthwise under the bonnet.

In addition to the standard version, the R21 Nevada/Savanna was also placed on the market, which was considerably larger (wheelbase of 2750 millimetres instead of the usual 2600 millimetres). These versions were seven-seater versions in which the rear seat could be folded away to create more luggage space.

In 1989 the R21 was given a facelift. Not only was the appearance of the car altered, Renault also made technical changes. The facelift did follow the facelift of the Renault 25.
The R21 was extended with a 2.0 litre turbo engine. This turbo also came on the market with the Quadra four-wheel drive from Renault.

In 1994 the production of all models was discontinued, except for the diesel versions of the Nevada/Savanna. These were to remain in production until the end of 1995, because at that time they only had a successor. The Renault 21 was succeeded by the Renault Laguna.

The success of the Renault 21

The Renault 21 was not an unworthy model. On the contrary, more than 36,000 units were sold in the Netherlands, which is an excellent result in the hard-won market segment. By the way, the Renault 21 sold well throughout Europe (and beyond). At the end of 1995, it was estimated to have sold more than 2 million units, which are very respectable final figures for the Renault 21.

When should the windscreen of your Renault 21 be replaced?

Windscreen damage is particularly annoying, but at the same time unavoidable. After all, windscreens are made of glass and glass can break. Yet there is no reason to panic when your windscreen is damaged. There are two cases in which the windscreen of the Renault 21 needs to be replaced. These are always window damage in the driver's field of vision:

  • A chip with a diameter greater than 20 millimetres
  • A branched crack

In all other cases the windscreen does not need to be replaced directly from your R21. However, it is wise to keep an eye on the windscreen damage. The window can tear further once it is weakened. However, it is not a failure for the MOT or a reason to leave the car standing.

How much does a new windscreen cost for the R21?

You already have a new windscreen for the R21 for € 199. That is fine automotive glass that comes from the after market. If you have already asked your Renault dealer about the price of a new windscreen, the answer from your dealer will undoubtedly be a lot higher than our price. There is a reason for that.

Brand dealers only sell brand windows. These windscreens have a brand logo, which makes them exclusive. They may only be sold by the Renault dealer. After market windscreens do not carry a brand logo. They are therefore not exclusive and this is reflected in the price. For cheap car windows of high quality, you need to be on the after market. This automotive glass is made in the same factories as the windows at your Renault dealer, only the price is much lower.
