Low cost windscreen replacement for your Renault Scénic

When developing the Renault Scénic, Renault had the idea that a niche market was being tapped. A nice model as an intermediate option, but not much more than that. The French could not sit much further from the truth. The Renault Scénic did not become an 'alternative' or 'intermediate option between a model that was too small and too large'. The Renault Scénic became a sales success in Europe and has since experienced several generations.

Do you have a Scénic and do you have damage in the windscreen? Then the windscreen of the Renault Scénic may need to be replaced. That does not always have to cost a lot, not when you opt for after market automotive glass. Before we look at this automotive glass with the best price-quality ratio, we first take a closer look at the special Renault model. Why has this become such a great success?

The Renault Scénic; a much bigger success than expected

The Renault Scénic was only launched in 1996. That is relatively late, because the concept of the Scénic (under the direction of Asensio) was already ready in 1991. The first generation Scénic had many similarities with the Renault Mégane, which in turn had borrowed a lot from the Renault R19. In terms of engine range, the 1.4 litre, the Energy 1.6 litre and the 1.9 litre diesel were no surprises; they had simply been taken directly from its predecessors.

The Scénic was marketed as an MPV and was to become a budget option of the Renault Espace, which was considerably larger. Renault was thinking of tapping into a niche with the Scénic, providing a production capacity of 450 cars per day. In the end, the peak in Douai would be as many as 2500 cars a day. The demand for the Scénic was much greater than the French had expected.

Facelift of the first generation

As early as 1997, the Renault Scénic was declared European Car of the Year. A facelift followed in 1999, but it had nothing to do with the success of the model itself. At that time, Renault was still following the line of the Mégane, which was also given a facelift. The complete front end was redesigned, a new 16-valve engine came under the bonnet and the rear lights were redesigned.

From the facelift onwards the Renault Scénic did become an independent model. The models after 1999 can no longer be called a 'small version of the Mégane' because there were now clear differences between the models. You can think of more storage space in the dashboard and the rear window that can be opened separately. Renault also ensured that the headrests on the rear seat no longer obstructed the view in the rear-view mirror.

The second generation of the Renault Scénic

Shortly after the facelift of the Scénic, the second generation came on the market in 2003. This had been completely redesigned; apparently Renault was well aware that there was more potential in the Scénic. A larger version was also launched on the market in 2004; the Renault Grand Scénic, a 7-seater.

The second generation was fitted with quite a few more style elements and technology, such as the automatic parking brake, LED lighting and being able to start the car without a key.

In 2009, the third generation of the Scénic was already on the market, including the New Grand Scénic. The third generation was also equipped with a crossover model. This generation was given a facelift in 2013. The design of the exterior in particular was adapted and the comfort for the occupants was increased.

The fourth generation was announced in 2016. It is larger than its predecessor, but according to Renault it is still an MPV and not a crossover. A wide range of engines has been developed for this generation, including a hybrid version. The fourth generation Scénic is equipped with various ADAS systems, such as lane guidance and a fatigue warning.

Renault soon found out that the popularity of the Scénic was much higher than expected. Production capacity had to be increased to meet demand. In Europe, the Scénic immediately made a major breakthrough. More than 4,400,000 copies were sold. In 2004, the Scénic also claimed more than 3% of the complete market share in the Netherlands, which is a considerable achievement.

When should the windscreen of the Renault Scénic be replaced?

When the windscreen is damaged, it is annoying. It can also be dangerous. That is why the Dutch legislator has drawn up requirements with which the windscreen must comply. In far from all cases of windscreen damage, windscreen replacement is required. Smaller chips and single cracks are usually no reason to panic.

When should a windscreen be replaced at the Renault Scénic? There are two cases where replacing the window is unavoidable. These are glass damage in the driver's field of vision:

  • A chip or crack in the windscreen with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres
  • A branched crack

Replacing the Renault Scénic windscreen is often much cheaper than people think. The Renault dealer has big price tags on the new windscreens. On the after market the prices are many times lower, while the quality is the same.

How much does a new Renault Scénic windscreen cost?

You already have a new windscreen for your Renault Scénic for only € 399. It is suitable for all models made between 2003 and 2009. The price of a new windscreen is much lower on the after market because there is no brand logo in the window. Renault dealers only sell windscreens with a brand logo. Because of this logo the windows are more exclusive and this exclusivity is reflected in the price. Too bad, because the brand logo literally does nothing for the windscreen.

After market windscreens are made in the same way as dealer windscreens. Even in the same factory! With this we can safely state that the after market windscreens offer the best price-quality ratio.

Can I replace the windscreen of the Renault Scénic myself?

Replacing a Renault Scénic windscreen is work for the experts. On the one hand because the windscreen has to be placed correctly to prevent leakage and breakage. On the other hand, the camera behind the windscreen on newer models often needs to be recalibrated to guarantee the functioning of the ADAS systems. Is the car window replacement necessary and are you no longer allowed to drive the Scénic because of the window damage? No worries; our certified fitting partners simply replace the windscreen on location throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. This can be at your home, in the car park at work or wherever the Scénic is parked.
