The Smart ForTwo is the result of a very special collaboration. Mercedes started working with Swatch, the watchmaker, to bring a very small car to the market. Nowadays everyone knows what a Smart is and there are a lot of cars on the road. Do you have one of these cars and is there any window damage in the field of vision of the driver? Then it is possible that the windscreen has to be replaced.
Before we look any further at this, we first dive into the special cooperation that two generations of the ForTwo have put on the modern car market.
Of course there were many critical noises when the first examples of the very small car were presented. A car for two people, in cooperation with a watch manufacturer and where the sheet metal is completely interchangeable, so you can change the color of your Smart within an hour....Was the car market ready for the Smart in 1998?
The Smart CityCoupé was launched in 1998. In 2004, the name was changed to Smart ForTwo, partly because a counterpart was launched on the market (the Smart ForFour, which failed by the way). So this is not a second generation. That was introduced in 2007.
However, it is difficult to call this a second generation. It's not about minor adjustments. No less than 90% of all technology has been completely replaced to make the car meet the current requirements, with a maximum speed that is 10 kilometres per hour higher than that of the first generation.
The first and second generation of the Smart ForTwo come together in the EQ version of the type. This is a fully electric car. In Norway, America and Canada the sale of the ForTwo with petrol engine was stopped prematurely, because Smart only wants to sell the EV in these markets. Smart immediately indicated that this idea would continue to be implemented in all markets in 2020.
And that's not really crazy. The Smart is the city car that you might think of first when it comes to very small cars. But small cars with a relatively low price and a lot of comfort. Attention is paid to the smallest details. Only that range of 130 kilometres in ideal weather conditions is hard to defend when you want to use the car for driving outside the city.
The Smart CityCoupé is the only Smart that managed to sell more than 10,000 copies in the Netherlands. The ForTwo and the ForFour are among the 9000 cars and the Smart Roadster doesn't even exceed the 1000 models. Does this mean that the Smart ForTwo is a flop? Not at all, because the cooperation between Mercedes and Swatch has resulted in very tight city cars, after which more car manufacturers have started looking at the possibilities of mking smaller cars.
Toyota noticed that this is not that easy. In 2005 the Toyota Endo was announced, the concept car that looked a lot like the Smart ForTwo, which had no other competitors. Toyota brought the car on the market as a Toyota iQ and with difficulty managed to sell more than 2000 copies in the Netherlands.
Car window damage is annoying, but not always the windscreen of the Smart ForTwo has to be replaced immediately in case of window damage. The windscreen must be replaced when it no longer meets the legal requirements. This means that in the case of an asterisk with a diameter of more than 20 millimetres or a branched crack in the driver's field of vision, a new windscreen must be fitted. This has to do with safety: the light from the headlights of oncoming traffic and sunlight are unpredictably reflected by asterisks and cracks in the windscreen and can dazzle the driver.
Replacing the car window yourself on a Smart ForTwo windscreen is not recommended. Incorrect installation can cause the windscreen to come loose in an accident, causing the passenger airbag to lose its function because the airbag needs the windscreen's resistance correctly. Also, a windscreen may leak if the glue is applied incorrectly.
Buying a cheap car window is very easy when you know what to look out for. For example, the windscreens at the brand dealer have a brand logo that only adds to the costs, without this logo doing anything for your windscreen. Since many of the second-hand windscreens also feature this brand logo, their price is based on the dealer prices.
There is a better option. If you choose after market windscreens for your Smart ForTwo, you choose car windscreens without a brand logo. These are manufactured in the same factories as the Smart ForTwo windscreens themselves and meet identical requirements. But because the brand logo is missing, prices are much lower. A new Smart ForTwo windscreen can be found on the after market for € 199. Including new windscreen moulding and on-site installation by our certified fitting partners, the price is only € 349. Your Smart dealer can't do it for such a price.
