The Tesla Model Y has come to be known as the long-awaited model that underwent numerous changes before it arrived at dealerships. Like the other Tesla models, the Y has become a success worldwide and tens of thousands of units are also driving around in the Netherlands. Before we look at the price of our cheap automotive glass, let's take a closer look at the Tesla Model Y, because why did it take so long before the model could finally be delivered?
The name 'Model Y' was established back in 2013, and in 2015 Elon Musk showed a model based on the Tesla Model 3, but with doors that opened upwards. In 2017, the new model was shown to shareholders, before coming to the general public in 2018. That was also the year the Model Y was supposed to go into production, but the huge delay with delivery of the Model 3 caused the Model Y to be delayed to 2019.
However, the real release date was not until 2020, when the Fremont factory finally started production of the new model. Of course, Tesla again chose to use pre-orders, which (as with its predecessor) created long waiting lists. Critics have pointed out that the Model Y was as yet launched too early, especially since less than a year later, adjustments had to be made because bugs had crept into the model.
The Tesla Model Y has won numerous awards, which will not surprise you if you drive a Model Y yourself. It has been called the electric car for holidaymakers because the Model Y can effortlessly tow a caravan or folding trailer AND because the Model Y itself can be converted into a driving hotel room (especially with Camp mode). The stunning torque (420 Nm for the standard RWD and up to 674 Nm for the Performance Long Range) and powerful engine (295 hp and 456 hp respectively) make the Model Y an ideal plug-in towing car.
At the same time, this model is revolutionary. It is the one of the first EV with a heat pump for interior heating, which is very desirable for the model's range. The Renault Zoe, BMW i3, Audi e-tron and several more electric cars also already had a heat pump, but Tesla's is significantly lighter because it has fewer parts.
Another revolutionary point is the fact that the entire rear end consists of one part, by developing a proprietary composition that does keep its shape (unlike aluminium), especially when heated. You can see more about that in the video under the headline below.
The Model Y is released as a Standard Range (60 kWh) and a Long Range (81 kWh) model, with the latter having a top speed of 250 kilometres per hour thanks to its 456 hp and 674 Nm of torque. Sounds great, but at these speeds you can see the range decreasing by the second, of course.
The success of the Tesla Model Y is huge. The model has broken a huge record, as in 2023 it was the best-selling car worldwide (beating the Toyota Corolla) and this was the first electric car ever to hold the title in its name. At the time of writing, this model is still the most popular electric car. In the Netherlands, however, the Tesla Model Y is not the best-selling Tesla, as that title is in the name of the Tesla Model 3. Nevertheless, by mid-2024, more than 25,000 units have already been sold in our country, keeping the Model Y extremely popular and leaving the Tesla Model S far behind.

Ironically, this video does a better job of explaining why the Model Y is special than the ads that were shown at the time of the announcement, especially since that model was tweaked after the initial ads, before the Y arrived at dealerships.
The rules around windscreen replacement are the same for electric cars as the rules around windscreen replacement for cars with a traditional internal combustion engine. This means that the windscreen must be replaced if there is windscreen damage in the driver's field of vision and it involves a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres or a branched crack. This is because in these cases, the car will be rejected at the MOT.
In all other cases, you can choose to continue driving with window damage. However, it is good to keep an eye on the chip or crack, especially if there are large temperature differences on either side of the window. If you continue driving with a chipped windscreen in summer and have the air conditioning on full blast on a hot day, chances are that the window will crack further.
