Windscreen replacement for your Toyota Supra

The Toyota Supra has been a legendary model from Japan, although sales figures don't reflect that. However, many car enthusiasts are still checking for used models on offer every week, as the older models in particular are still very much in demand. Do you own one of these models and need to replace the windscreen of your Supra? Then you will find quality car windows at competitive prices with us. Before we tell you how our low prices are possible, we must first give space to the special model from Japan.

The Toyota Celica XX or the first generation of the Toyota Supra

The first Supra entered the Japanese market in 1978, but under a different name. The model was called the Toyota Celica XX and this model would be the first car worldwide with a navigation computer. Incidentally, the first export models were not offered outside Japan until 1979, and these models were supposed to be attractive mainly because of bonus features, including power windows, cruise control and an optional sunroof.

In 1981, Toyota launched the second generation, which was given a completely new design and with it, the model moved much further away from the Toyota Celica. As usual, models for the Japanese market would be smaller than export models, which was solely due to tax regulations in Japan itself.

In North America, a focus market for this model, two types were marketed, the P-type and the L-type. The P (Performance) was the sportier version, where the L (Luxury) was mainly meant to offer comfort. However, the main differences were mainly in the options and not in the basic versions themselves.

From this point on, Toyota decided to modify the Toyota Supra every year, such as the new engine in 1982 (model year 1983) and a completely new design in 1985 (without immediately calling it a new generation). In all modifications, Toyota ensured that the Supra would gain more power (both in torque and horsepower) each time.

1986: the third generation of the Toyota Supra

In 1986, the Toyota Supra would be completely separated from the Celica and they would become two completely separate models (partly because the Celica went to front-wheel drive. For the Supra, the new generation was especially the time when considerably more technology would be pumped into the model, including ABS and TEMS (electric shock absorbers). About a quarter of a million units would be made of this generation.

Toyota stuck to the Supra tradition and continued to update the model annually, constantly adding new features and more powerful engines. In 1988, for instance, AM/FM radio was added to the range with integrated CD player, and in 1990 it was time for a completely new steering wheel.

1993: the fourth generation (through 2002)

Back in 1989, Toyota started designing the fourth generation, using the Z30 Soarer powertrain from Lexus as a basis. However, it would take until 1992 before the first test models were made, and a year later the fourth generation would actually arrive at dealerships. This generation was mainly about power (for instance, the base model had 220 hp, 285 Nm and a whopping 5800 rpm). This generation also got a completely new gearbox, with the 6-speed Getrag/Toyota V160 gearbox for all turbo models. To show off the power even better, Toyota chose to cut weight considerably, mainly by using more aluminium. This eliminated some 100 kilograms, while giving these models more features than the third generation. A handsome achievement that ensured these Supra models were extremely sporty.

The end of production was downright tragic. Sales of all sports cars plummeted in North America in the late 1990s, and the yen's strength made the Supra increasingly unattractive. Then, when the Supra was also unable to meet Japan's own emissions requirements in 2002, the curtain fell on the model that already had legendary status and a laundry list of different versions and specifications.

The Toyota GR Supra

In 2019, the Supra returned to the scene, in a new guise that looked especially sporty and with an engine that enthusiasts said had ‘a soul’, partly because of its great sound. This is one of the car models that has received criminally little attention, partly because of the popularity of modest city cars and plug-in models, of which the Toyota GR Supra is the opposite. It's fun behind the wheel, hefty power under the bonnet and finish with an eye for detail, and none of that has prevented this top Toyota model, which is also a tribute to its predecessors, from flying under the radar.

How successful has the Toyota Supra actually been?

When it comes to the success of the Toyota Supra, it is mainly about the disappointing results for the latest Toyota GR Supra. It is hardly about all the models that were at dealerships in the 20th century and became a relative sales success. Not directly in the Netherlands, by the way, as around 50 units have been sold here at the time of writing
and it is expected that there will not be a rush for this model in the near future either.

Usually we would show you an advert or advertisement for the model here, but that would do the Toyota Supra an injustice. Therefore, we have posted one of the most popular Toyota Supra compilations from the Netherlands below, which undeniably shows how well Toyota made the Supra.

When should a Toyota Supra windscreen be replaced?

Although windscreens these days are strong (and even often innovative), it is still glass that can be damaged. In far from all cases, the windscreen of the Toyota Supra needs to be replaced immediately in case of windscreen damage. On the contrary, there are two cases where the windscreen does need to be replaced. When the glass damage is a branched crack or a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres and is within the driver's field of vision, the windscreen of the Toyota Supra needs to be replaced. Your car will then no longer pass the next inspection.

What does a new windscreen for the Toyota Supra cost?

As an owner of a Toyota Supra, you probably already know that replacement parts for this model can be pricey, and that certainly applies to windscreens. Still, you really don't have to pay the top price that the Toyota dealer charges you. On the contrary, you can order a new windscreen online with exactly the same quality, but at a significantly lower price.

Our Toyota Supra windscreens are made in the same factories as the original car windows for this model, but our windscreens have no brand logo. This lacks the (unnecessarily) exclusive character and thus we can offer our car windows many times cheaper. For example, you can already have a new Supra windscreen for just €899 (including VAT).

Can you replace the Supra's windscreen yourself?

Windscreen replacement is a precise job where mistakes or accidents can cause damage to yourself and the car. If you have little or no experience in replacing car windows, we strongly discourage you from getting started on your Toyota Supra yourself. We work together with certified fitting partners who replace car windows on location throughout the Netherlands and Belgium, so you can always count on optimum quality and convenience.
