The Volkswagen ID.3 is the first model in Volkswagen's ID.Series, a particularly successful line from the German brand, responding to the active demand for electric cars. After the ID.3, Volkswagen would follow relatively quickly with larger models, to further strengthen its market share within EVs. Incidentally, the ID.3 was an immediate success: there were tens of thousands of pre-orders before the model would actually roll out of the factories.

The story of the ID.3 begins not in 2019, the year of its first production, but in 2016 when the I.D. concept car was shown to the public in Paris. It was the birth of the ID.Series, an all-electric model line with plenty of exciting features, such as cameras instead of side mirrors, LIDAR sensors to allow the car to drive autonomously and a special battery pack design. As usual, many promises and designs would linger in concept mode and not come along to the actual model.
In 2019, the ID.3 was then shown to the public at the motor show in Germany. A model built on the new MEB platform, it was mainly very similar to the Volkswagen Golf, although the interior space is considerably larger (due to the extra room in an electric car). The number of pre-orders immediately spiked to 10,000 in the first 24 hours and within no time this became as high as 30,000.
To give electric models the best chance, Volkswagen set up an entire factory in Zwickau where some 350,000 models could be made annually. That soon proved too meagre, as a new production line for the ID.3 had to be built in Dresden as early as 2021.
When it comes to electric cars, it's really always about the battery packs and range of the models. The ID.3 is marketed as an affordable entry-level model, but of course that only applies to the base model. This has a 45 kWh battery pack and a range of around 350 kilometres. If you put down a bit more money for the ID.3, you will come across the 58 kWh battery pack that has 75 kilometres of additional range. Volkswagen's Pro S ID.3, the top-of-the-range model, has a 77 kWh battery pack with an output of 204 hp and a range of more than 550 kilometres. Volkswagen has not only set up a wide range, but at the same time ensured that there is more than enough to choose from in terms of value for money.
Below, you can see one of the commercials for the ID.3, an advertisement where the automaker cleverly bets on the technology and features (such as the HUD) to make it clear that this is not only an 'affordable' car, but at the same time, it is the car that the buyer can drive straight into the future with.
Regardless of whether it is an electric car or a car with the traditional internal combustion engine, windscreen damage by no means always means that the windscreen needs to be replaced immediately. Most people can simply continue driving with a chipped windscreen, especially if the chip or crack is not in the driver's field of vision. If it is, it is a good idea to look at the extent of the damage. Is it windscreen damage in the driver's field of vision and is this a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres or is it a branched crack? Then the car will be rejected at the MOT and the windscreen of the ID.3 will have to be replaced. This, of course, has to do with traffic safety: you will only have optimal visibility on the road if you drive with a clean windscreen and there is no distracting glass damage in the windscreen.
