When, after the ID.3 and ID.4 (and the related ID.5), the German carmaker announced the Volkswagen ID.7, it was no big surprise, despite the fact that this was after all a mid-size car, a dying breed in today's car market. Nevertheless, this model immediately gained a lot of attention, which was mainly due to its strong battery packs, high cargo capacity and ample space inside the car itself.

The ID.7 is a liftback (basically a hatchback with a faint slope between the roof and the rear of the car) and came to market in 2023. The model replaces the Volkswagen Passat and Volkswagen Arteon as the German brand's flagship mid-size car. Like the Volkswagen ID.4, the ID.7 is also built on the MEB platform, although the ID.7 is a considerably larger model. Indeed, the model is mentioned in the same breath as the BMW i4 and the Tesla Model S.
In 2024, Volkswagen additionally introduced the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer, which, unlike the liftback, has a continuous rear that increases boot space considerably. At the time of writing, there are two battery packs available for the ID.7. The Volkswagen ID.7 Pro comes with an 82 kWh battery pack (282 hp and a range of 621 kilometres). The ID.7 Pro S has a stronger battery pack with 91 kWh (also 282 hp but with 700 kilometres of range). Both versions have an impressive 550 Nm of torque, which means both models get from standstill to 100 kilometres per hour within 7 seconds, despite the car's size and weight.
What is clear is that the ID.7 is already being called a formidable competitor to the Tesla Model S, is getting a lot of positive reviews and is already being made in China in large numbers by FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC-Volkswagen, the Asian branches (in the form of collaborations and acquisitions) of the German brand.
What is also striking is that the marketing behind the ID.7 is extraordinary compared to models like the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4. Like the clip below, in which Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) drives through landscapes where the average Volkswagen driver never or hardly ever goes, and in which the actor seems to get more attention than the new VW model itself.
As with cars with an internal combustion engine, you can also continue driving with windscreen damage with an electric car. In fact, a chipped windscreen in many cases is not nearly as bad as you are led to believe.
