The Volvo 740 is not just the cheaper brother of the 760. Despite a limited number of production years, Volvo managed to pump more than a million units out of the factories and the 700 series became a huge success mainly thanks to the 740. Many of the models can still be found on the road. Do you own a 740 and need a windscreen replacement? Then you can always find quality windscreens with us where the price of our automotive glass is always as low as possible. Before we look at this further, let's put the special Volvo 740 under the microscope to see why this model is so special.
At Volvo, it is common practice to produce the more luxurious types within a series first, and then make the models for the bulk of the market. That way, the luxury car can be used to find teething problems in the model series, before being pounded out of the factories in large numbers as a stripped-down model with a much lower entry price.
Such was the case with the Volvo 740. This is nothing less than the stripped-down variant of the Volvo 760 that was launched in 1982. The 740 followed only two years later and the difference between the models is so great that it seems like the models do not even belong to the same series. However, looking at the specifications and especially under the bonnet, the similarities are striking.
What is particularly striking about the Volvo 740 is that it was a particularly simple, almost Spartan car at its introduction. Volvo had a particularly good reason for this. The Volvo 740 is one of the few models from Sweden designed to be a sales success. And in doing so, its eyes weren't even mainly on Europe.
Indeed, the hard, angular design with sharp edges was entirely intentional. The designers had looked at the models that were popular in America and made sure the 740 had exactly the same look. To give popularity a helping hand, the car was simultaneously manufactured as cheaply and easily as possible, to allow mass production at competitive prices.
In 1992, production of the Volvo 740 ceased as its successor (the Volvo 940) was ready to roll out of the factories, but the Volvo 740 would still be seen on the streets for a long time. Indeed, even today, many models of this series still drive around on Swedish roads.
In Sweden alone, there are still 35,000 Volvo 740 models registered for road share. That is a large number for a model that has been out of production for decades. However, the Volvo 740 is still very popular worldwide as a refurbisher, refurbishment car or a car for the winter months (because of its rear-wheel drive). That this is one of the last models from Volvo that was made with care and attention to quality materials undoubtedly contributed to this.
At the same time, Volvo's marketing has contributed a lot to the model's success. Forget very briefly about Volvo's more modern advertisements before watching the clip we managed to fish up from the archives. The presenter begins with (translated from Swedish):
'Sometimes the most unexpected things can happen. And then it can be handy to have a stable, safe car. Just ask Brian, who can talk about it.'
Volvo made more than 1.2 million units of the Volvo 740, which narrowly lost out to the Volvo 140 (exactly 13,149 more of these were made). In the Netherlands, sales success was moderate with around 26,000 units, with which the 740 struggled to leave the Volvo 240 and Volvo XC90 behind, but had to beat the Volvo XC60.
However, the Volvo 740 did become a huge success worldwide, partly due to its excessive focus on the US market.
Windscreen damage is extremely annoying, but in far from all cases the windscreen of your Volvo 740 needs to be replaced immediately. In most cases, you can even continue driving with a chipped windscreen. In two cases, however, windscreen replacement is necessary. These are windscreen damage in the driver's field of vision involving a branched crack or a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres. With this type of windscreen damage, windscreen repair is also no longer an option, you will need a new Volvo 740 windscreen.
You already have a new windscreen for your Volvo 740 for €249 (excluding clips, fitting and delivery). Our new Volvo windscreens are significantly cheaper than the price your dealer charges you, while the quality is identical. The price difference is in the brand logo in original Volvo automotive glass, which does nothing for the window but makes the windscreens exclusive. This brand logo makes the automotive glass so pricey that our new automotive glass is often even cheaper than used automotive glass for your Volvo. This is because our windscreens do not have a brand logo, so we can offer our car windows considerably cheaper.
Car window replacement yourself is certainly possible on models like the Volvo 740, but it is best to leave replacing the windscreen to an automotive glass specialist. To make things easier for you, we work with certified fitting partners who replace automotive glass on-site throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. That means you can simply have the windscreen of your Volvo 740 replaced in your driveway or in a car park while you are at work or out shopping.
Are you an automotive glass specialist yourself or do you have a garage with numerous professionals? Then you can also order all our automotive glass excluding fitting. We work together with garages throughout the Netherlands and would also be happy to help you so that you can offer your customers the best quality at low prices, while benefiting from our knowledge of car windows.
