Some car models were never meant to be sales successes on the market, but more a way for a car manufacturer to show what is possible. Other models are so exclusive that the big market could never be reached. In the case of the Volvo 780, the situation was completely different. This model from Sweden was supposed to be a resounding success, but failed miserably. Not even 10,000 units would be made before Volvo pulled the plug on the model and would not make a similar model for years. It wasn't until the Volvo C70 in 1997 that the Swedes would regain the courage to take up coupes.
Do you have a Volvo 780 and need a windscreen replacement? Even for this model, you can find new windscreens at very competitive prices with us. Before we surprise you with our cheap automotive glass, let's take a quick look back at a model that didn't stand a chance.
In 1985, Volvo presented the Volvo 780, a more luxurious model that evolved from the Volvo 740 and Volvo 760 and had to be produced in limited numbers by Bertone in Italy. This also led to this model often being called the Volvo 780 Bertone. During the presentation, the 780 made the mouths of all present fall open, but it was not because of the luxury, design or features the car had to offer. It was the price that stood out the most. Because the model was made by Bertone, the price was much higher than the other models in Volvo's 700 series.
In 1988, the new price of the Volvo 780 was equal to the price of a Jaguar XJ6 (a model with much more prestige), but Jaguar made things considerably worse for Volvo by deducting around €5000 from the new price in 1989. This ensured that the Volvo 780 lost all appeal and was actually hard to sell.
Things got worse for Volvo. The idea was to throw a V6 turbo under the bonnet to make the model more attractive. During test drives of the new engine (based on the B28) in the Volvo 740 and 760, it was immediately apparent that this would not be possible. In fact, there was less space under the bonnet of the Volvo 780, which would cause the engine to overheat.
With that, the B28E remained the standard engine, with the 2.0 turbo 16v engine for the Italian market and the D24TIC turbo diesel as alternatives, but with that, the Volvo 780 could not justify the huge price tag. In total, some 8,500 examples of the 780 were made and even in Volvo-land Sweden, no more than some 350 models are still in use today. Only 155 were sold in the Netherlands. And looking at the advertising for the model, we can understand this very well. The main message in the promotional video seems to be mainly that the model is expensive and complicated.
When you have one of the few remaining Volvo 780 models, you naturally want the car to look its best. While the windscreen by no means needs to be replaced in all cases of windscreen damage, we see that special models like this one are more likely to switch to windscreen replacement to keep the model's status optimal. After all, a whole, well-cleaned windscreen adds to the car's iconic image.
So when does the windscreen really need to be replaced? Only in two cases of damage in the windscreen should you look for new automotive glass. These are windscreen damage in the driver's field of vision involving a branched crack or a chip at least 20 millimetres in diameter. This is because in these cases, the car will no longer pass the inspection.
You already have a new windscreen for your Volvo 780 Bertone for €899. These can still be specially produced on request, which is exceptional for a model that can hardly be found on the streets any more. The price does not include fitting and/or window replacement. If you want to see the total price immediately, you can indicate your preferences on the order page and the website will immediately calculate the price. So you always know exactly what you pay and when the windscreen will be delivered or replaced.
Our new windscreen prices are much lower than the prices your Volvo dealer will quote you when you enquire about windscreen replacement. This is because the windscreens at the dealership come with a brand logo, which makes the automotive glass exclusive. Since the brand logo does nothing else for the car window and our windscreens have no brand logo, you can therefore always come to us for the best value for money.
Do you have little or no windscreen replacement experience? Then we strongly advise against replacing the windscreen of the Volvo 780 yourself. Incorrect window fitting or damage to the car while replacing the windscreen can cause a hefty depreciation in value and even dangerous situations. With us, you can arrange on-site windscreen replacement by our certified fitting partners right away, so that soon you can just get back on the streets safely with your Bertone.
