Cheap windscreen replacement for your Volvo 850

There are few Volvo models that have caused as much controversy as the Volvo 850. This model has been a breaking point in the long history of the Swedish carmaker, which needed a new way to regain market share in the European (and even Swedish) market after many failed models and strange decisions. An exciting new road for the Swedes with the Volvo 850

The Volvo 850 entered the market in 1991 and would remain in production until 1997. The design team was led by Peter Augustson (he would later become chief at Saab) and the Volvo 850 would become Jan Wilsgaard's closing number. However, the 850 was not a stand-alone model, but was part of the larger Project Galaxy with which Volvo would eventually redefine itself. This explains the many similarities with the Volvo 440, although the 400 series would still have an engine from Renault, where the 850 got its 'own' Volvo engine under the bonnet.

But why was the 850 so revolutionary if the model looked so much like its predecessors from the same project? Actually, it is simple when you put the models side by side. With the 850, Volvo opted for a sportier look for the first time, with a transverse 5-cylinder and front-wheel drive. Yes, it still opted for large boot space and safety first, but at the same time there was a lot of focus on features, luxury and sportiness.

Critics said this would destroy the models' solidity. This turned out to be nonsense, as many of the models drove more than 400,000 kilometres and there are plenty of models still driving around even today.

Besides, Volvo wouldn't be Volvo if nothing remarkable happened during development. During production, the Swedes decided to use a 2.5-litre displacement for the engines for the 850. The 4-cylinder, which was under the bonnet at the time, didn't feel like it. Volvo therefore had to replace it with a 5-cylinder, to give the car the sporty characteristics that would contribute to the model's success.

A special market for Volvo in the 1990s

The 1990s were messy for Volvo. It was the time when the old models were still in production (the Volvo 240 was still in production, as was the Volvo 440 that saw the light of day in 1988), with the new Volvo 850 being particularly similar in size to the Volvo 740 and Volvo 940.

Now, you might think it was an easy choice for the buyer. On the one hand, the somewhat outdated rear-wheel-drive models and, on the other, the newer, modern front-wheel-drive models with a sportier look. However, the choice became quite difficult because the Volvo 850 was considerably more expensive. It was hoped at the time that Volvo would launch a cheaper 4-cylinder version of the Volvo 850, but the Swedes did not. On the contrary, the carmaker shifted its attention to the premium segment to make itself broad there.

The Volvo 850 T-5R

An article on the Volvo 850 is not complete if the Volvo 850 T-5R is not mentioned at least once. 2537 examples were made in yellow and, after huge demand, 2516 black and 1911 green ones were also made. These models had a 240 hp engine with a whopping 330 Nm of torque.

Fun fact: Volvo wanted to make a promotional video for the model, but the type was sold out before the promotion could be finished. Later, Volvo decided to release the following video from its own archives, as there was a lot of interest in it after all. We suspect that the typical, characterising engine sound had yet to be added to the video.

Was the Volvo 850 a sales success?

More than 1,360,000 units of the Volvo 850 were made, while it was only in production for a limited number of years. In the Netherlands, the model was sold just over 17,500 times,
placing it between the Volvo XC90 (almost 20,000 units) and the Volvo S80 (just over 15,000 units). Not only did this make the Volvo 850 an unprecedented success, it was also the birthright of the Volvo S70 and the Volvo V70, a model series that would go on to have even greater success worldwide.

When should the windscreen of your Volvo 850 be replaced?

Do you have a Volvo 850 with windscreen damage or do you have your eye on a used 850 with a crack or chip in the windscreen? Then it is good to know when the windscreen needs to be replaced. This is because you do not always have to look for windscreen replacement in case of a chipped windscreen. Only if it concerns a branched crack or chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres and the damage is in the driver's field of vision, the windscreen has to be replaced.

In all other cases, you can continue driving with the damaged windscreen. However, it is wise to check the damage regularly to make sure the damage has not worsened.
