The Volvo 960 is a premium version of the 900 series that would gain special status alongside the Volvo S90 and Volvo V90, as it ended the Swedish tradition regarding the powertrain. The Volvo 960 never became a resounding success, but as a higher-end model, that was never Volvo's idea either.

When Volvo showed off the new Volvo 960 in 1990, it was particularly apparent that this model was not new. In fact, we had already seen the whole front end in 1988 during the facelift of the Volvo 760. While the rear of the 960 was completely new (designed under the direction of Håkan Malmgren), the 960 still mainly resembled its little sister, the Volvo 940.
In 1995, Volvo made sure to give the Volvo 960 considerably more allure, with a completely new, more modern front end and a completely new suspension for the Volvo's rear axle, which would actually make it a unique and extremely comfortable model. We should take a moment here to reflect on exactly what the model series has meant to Volvo. The Volvo 960/S90/V90 was the model series with which Volvo said goodbye to the decades-long tradition of rear-wheel drive. A moment that would become significant in Volvo's history and that would make the younger generation in Scandinavia appreciate the older models even more. After this series, Volvo would only make standard models with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
The Volvo 960 did not become nearly as popular as the Volvo 940, which makes sense when considering its target market. However, the more exclusive, expensive and luxurious Volvo 960 found eager sales worldwide. In total, almost 190,000 units were made of the complete series (Volvo 960, Volvo S90 and the Volvo V90). Not a bad score for a luxury model that was mainly meant to serve the premium segment of the car market.
Fair is fair, the fact that Volvo paid a lot of attention to advertising contributed to the success of the 900 series. Not only is this a sterling piece of work for the time (1995), it is at the same time a promo in which Volvo itself clearly states that it is mainly building on its own success, with plenty of major pluses for the new 960 borrowed from the Volvo 850.
