A well-maintained, restored Volvo Amazon is a car that makes the hearts of many car enthusiasts beat considerably faster. Volvo designed and produced a legend with the Amazon, of which more than half a million models rolled out of the factories. Do you have a Volvo Amazon and need the windscreen replaced or do you want to restore a Volvo 121 and are looking for cheap automotive glass? Then you have come to the right place. Before we tell you what a new windscreen for your Volvo Amazon will cost, let's give the Amazon the space it deserves.
When Volvo had the new model ready and wanted to market it found out that 'Amazon' was already being used by Kreidler in all markets outside Sweden, Norway and Finland. Therefore, the name 'Volvo Amazon' was only used for the northern countries and the model was named Volvo 121, Volvo 122S or Volvo 123GT (depending on the type) in the rest of the world.
On 3 August 1956, the first Volvo Amazon arrived at the dealership in Skövde (Swedish city between the two largest lakes). A month later, the models also appeared in Örebro (Swedish city north of Skövde), after which the model would be rolled out all over the world. For the Volvo Amazon, Volvo decided to keep the base of the PV 444, but modernised the entire design and borrowed (for convenience) the design of the Imperial's grille from Chrysler. The four-door version of the Amazon attracted particular attention, as this model seemed considerably more spacious than its predecessor. In 1961, Volvo also brought out a two-door and five-door, of course also equipped with the three-point seatbelt that would put Volvo ahead of safety regulations, something the Swedes would excel at for years to come.
The Amazon is now a legendary model, often praised for its design and quality. What is less well known (unless you own a Volvo Amazon yourself) is that new owners may invariably start a search for the handbrake in the car. This is because it is not located between the two front seats, as usual, but to the left of the driver. This has to do with the idea of making a full front seat for the Amazon. The Swedes later decided not to do this, as it could cause three people to sit in the front, while only two seatbelts were available.
Incidentally, the strange placement of the handbrake also carried over slightly to the Volvo 140. The first models of this type also had the handbrake on the left instead of on the right.
Few models become both sales successes and iconic models, but the Volvo Amazon managed this (fairly effortlessly, by the way). As many as 667,332 were made, including the 4-cylinder 1.6-litre with 60 or 85 hp, the 1.8-litre with 75 or 90 hp or even 95 hp (1965) and 115 hp (1967) and, of course, the 2.0-litre from 1968 with 90 or 118 hp. In the Swedish market, where the Amazon saw its greatest successes, 8% of the total 297,000 sold can still be found on the streets at the time of writing.
We could post a video here of someone refurbishing a Volvo Amazon to its original glory, but no doubt you have seen it often enough. So we dug into the old box and found one of the original commercials, with the theme 'drive it like you hate it', a promotion in which Volvo mainly wanted to convey that the new Amazon is indestructible.
Usually, we tell you that the windscreen needs to be replaced when there is windscreen damage in the driver's field of vision involving a branched crack or a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres. However, car enthusiasts are much more likely to opt for windscreen replacement in the case of the Volvo Amazon, as windscreen damage significantly undermines its image. If the windscreen cannot be repaired, you can always opt for windscreen replacement to make your Volvo Amazon look great again.
Of course, you are allowed to continue driving with a chipped windscreen when the damage is not in the driver's field of vision, especially since many of the Amazon models are no longer subject to MOT. In those cases, look especially at whether it is safe to continue driving as windscreen damage reflects incoming light unpredictably and can blind you while driving.
You already have a new windscreen for the Volvo Amazon for €529. This price includes VAT, but does not include delivery and/or fitting. The price of our automotive glass is significantly cheaper than windscreens at your Volvo dealer, because our after market automotive glass has no brand logo. Furthermore, our automotive glass is identical and the car windows are usually made in the same factories as your brand dealer's more expensive windows.
Our new windows are indistinguishable from the original windscreens for the Amazon. They are also both cheaper and easier to find than used car windows for the Volvo Amazon.
