The Volvo XC60 caused quite a stir when it was introduced in 2008, but it was the second generation that really got car lovers excited about this compact crossover SUV from Sweden. The Volvo XC60 (like many models from Volvo) is not a stand-alone model. It is part of the '60 series, in which you will also find the Volvo S60 and, of course, the Volvo V60. The XC60 is the model that was supposed to conquer the crossover SUV market, thanks in part to the glass roof and a completely new front of the car. The 20-inch wheels completed the tough and rugged look at its release in 2008.
In 2013, a facelift was carried out that would apply to the entire '60 series. Most of it concerned cosmetic changes. The biggest, noticeable change was the 7-inch touchscreen screen that would be prominently placed in the car. This was also the model that would still be executed as a plug-in hybrid under its own batch. Only from 2021 would these models be named 'Recharge' to make the distinction clearer.
With sales of over 26,000 at the moment (the model is still in production at the time of writing this article), the XC60's success seems relatively small, especially when compared to models like the Volvo V40, Volvo S40 and the Volvo V70. However, this is a distorted picture, as the Volvo XC60 is an exclusive premium SUV placed in a much higher market segment. Not only are its sales figures therefore better than they seem, numerous tests and reviews also show that the Volvo XC60 is a particularly good model. This does not only apply to the base model, the XC60 Recharge also scored highly. In the test by Autoreview, the plug-in hybrid from Sweden crushed the BMW X3 xDrive30e, the Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV and the Land Rover Discovery Sport P300e.
